ABOUT THIS CURRICULUM

About This Curriculum

At Eden Park, the Fundamental British Values- Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance- are intricately woven into our curriculum. We also educate our pupils about the nine Protected Characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010: Religion and Belief, Sex Equality, Pregnancy and Maternity, Age, Sexual Orientation, Gender Reassignment, Marriage and Civil Partnership, Disability, and Race.

In the Early Years

In our Early Years Foundation Stage, we lay the groundwork for understanding British Values and Protected Characteristics through age-appropriate activities. Children learn about democracy by making choices in their learning and play. The concept of the rule of law is introduced through understanding classroom rules and routines. We encourage individual liberty by allowing children to express their preferences and interests. Mutual respect and tolerance are fostered by celebrating diverse cultures and traditions, helping children appreciate similarities and differences among their peers.

KS1 (Years 1 and 2)

In Key Stage 1, we build upon the Early Years foundation by integrating British Values and Protected Characteristics into daily learning. Pupils participate in class discussions and decision-making processes, reinforcing democratic principles. They explore the importance of rules and laws in society and understand the reasons behind them. Lessons and stories highlight individual rights and responsibilities, promoting individual liberty. Through various subjects, children learn to respect and value diversity, fostering mutual respect and tolerance.

KS2 (Years 3 and 4)

During Years 3 and 4, pupils deepen their understanding of British Values and Protected Characteristics. They engage in more complex discussions about democracy, including the electoral process and civic responsibility. The rule of law is examined through historical and contemporary contexts. Students are encouraged to express their opinions respectfully, supporting individual liberty. Curriculum topics and school activities promote an appreciation of cultural diversity, emphasizing mutual respect and tolerance.

KS2 (Years 5 and 6)

In the upper Key Stage 2 years, students critically engage with British Values and Protected Characteristics, preparing them for secondary education and beyond. They analyse democratic systems and their impact on society. The rule of law is explored through debates and case studies, enhancing their understanding of justice and fairness. Pupils are encouraged to take initiative and lead projects, exemplifying individual liberty. Through collaborative work and community involvement, they demonstrate mutual respect and tolerance, embracing the diverse society in which we live.

Enriching Fundamental British Values and Protected Characteristics

Beyond the classroom, Eden Park enriches pupils' understanding of British Values and Protected Characteristics through assemblies, school councils, and community projects. These experiences provide real-life contexts for students to practice democracy, understand the importance of laws, exercise personal freedoms responsibly, and show respect and tolerance towards others. Our comprehensive approach ensures that pupils are well-equipped to contribute positively to modern British society.
