Keeping Children Safe Online at Eden Park
At Eden Park Primary and Nursery School, we recognise that online safety is a fundamental aspect of safeguarding in today’s digital world. Our approach is both robust and proactive, ensuring that all members of our community—pupils, staff, and families—are equipped to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
We deliver a comprehensive, age-appropriate online safety curriculum as part of our computing and PSHE provision, which includes topics such as digital citizenship, cyberbullying, online relationships, and seeking help. This is enriched with annual events like Safer Internet Day and reinforced through assemblies and everyday classroom discussion. Each child is taught our SMART rules—encouraging them to Stay safe, never Meet strangers, not to Accept unknown messages, to Remember not everything online is true, and to Tell a trusted adult if something worries them.
All pupils and adults sign Acceptable Use Agreements at the start of each academic year, and our school systems are protected by filtering and monitoring tools that meet DfE standards. Any concerns are logged and followed up swiftly by our Designated Safeguarding Lead, in line with our safeguarding procedures. Staff and governors receive regular training to stay up to date with emerging trends and risks.
To further support pupils, we have developed a child-friendly Internet Safety Policy that outlines in simple terms the steps children can take to stay safe, such as not sharing personal information, not meeting people from the internet, and reporting anything upsetting. This helps embed a strong culture of safety and vigilance throughout the school.
How Parents and Carers Can Support Online Safety at Home
We firmly believe that the partnership between school and home is key to keeping children safe online. Parents and carers play a vital role in reinforcing safe behaviours and setting appropriate boundaries for device use.
Here are some ways families can support online safety:
- Talk Regularly: Open conversations help children feel confident to share their experiences online. Use prompts such as “What games are you playing?”, “Do you talk to anyone online?” and “Do you know what to do if something online upsets you?”. You can find conversation starters in our parent information sheets and from the National Online Safety website.
- Use Parental Controls: Set up parental controls on devices and platforms to manage what your child can access. Check privacy settings on apps like TikTok and ensure children are using age-appropriate platforms.
- Be Present: Whenever possible, be in the room while your child is using the internet. This allows you to observe, offer guidance, and address any concerns as they arise.
- Encourage Healthy Habits: Talk about screen time limits and the importance of balancing online and offline activities. Discuss how to respond to peer pressure and avoid risky online trends.
- Know Where to Go for Help: Make sure your child knows they can talk to you, a teacher, or another trusted adult if they are worried. Resources like Childline (0800 1111) and the NSPCC offer further support.
