Physical Education (PE)
The curriculum is thematically designed so that all year groups experience an annual cycle of three main elements: gymnastics, dance and athletics.

ABOUT THIS CURRICULUM
Physical Education at Eden Park
At Eden Park Primary and Nursery School, Physical Education (PE) is a vital part of our curriculum, promoting physical development, healthy lifestyles, and key values such as teamwork, respect and independence. Our PE provision is underpinned by the Get Set 4 PE scheme, which ensures consistency, progression and breadth across all year groups. Children experience an annual cycle of gymnastics, dance and athletics, alongside ball skills, invasion games and striking and fielding sports. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and tailored to meet the needs of every child. In addition, we are proud to make full use of our local swimming pool, giving all children regular opportunities to develop their water confidence, swimming skills and understanding of water safety—an essential life skill in our coastal town.
Physical Education in the Early Years (EYFS)
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin their PE journey through engaging, play-based activities designed to develop their balance, coordination and fundamental movement skills. Using the Get Set 4 PE framework, teachers deliver lessons that are rich in movement and creativity, helping children build their confidence and control. Activities include dance, simple games and imaginative movement sessions that support both physical development and social interaction. Outdoor spaces are used daily to give children ample opportunities for active exploration.
Physical Education in KS1
In Key Stage 1, pupils build on the foundations laid in EYFS by developing core skills such as agility, balance and coordination. The Get Set 4 PE programme provides structured lessons that introduce children to gymnastics routines, dance sequences and basic athletic disciplines. Pupils also begin to learn the rules and expectations of team games, developing their cooperation, turn-taking and spatial awareness. Through fun, active learning, children develop a love of movement and gain the confidence to participate fully in physical activities.
Physical Education in KS2
In Key Stage 2, pupils continue to refine and extend their physical skills through increasingly challenging activities. Through Get Set 4 PE, they participate in a wide range of sports including netball, football, rounders and cricket, and continue to develop competence in gymnastics, dance and athletics. Children also take on leadership roles, such as leading warm-ups or supporting their peers. A key enrichment to our KS2 offer is our swimming curriculum. Using our local swimming pool, pupils receive structured swimming sessions where they learn to be confident, safe swimmers—an essential skill in our seaside community.
Enriching Physical Education
We believe that Physical Education should extend beyond weekly timetabled lessons to create a culture of physical activity and wellbeing. Our curriculum is enriched through termly sports festivals, visits from local sports coaches and clubs, and opportunities to represent Eden Park in friendly competitions. Children enjoy engaging in challenges that promote perseverance and teamwork, while also learning the importance of healthy living. Our use of Get Set 4 PEensures that all lessons are inclusive, engaging and purposeful, while our swimming provision equips pupils with vital life skills to navigate the water safely and with confidence—a particular priority in our coastal town of Brixham.
To help our sport be as competitive as possible, classes are divided into one of four "sports houses" each headed up by a pair of well-known athletes, promoting a wide range of sports and backgrounds.. The houses compete across the year.
The houses are currently:
- Hoy-Biles
- Anderson-Holmes
- Rashford-Osaka
- Wilkinson-Simmonds
