Year 1
Year 1 students build on the skills and knowledge they gained in Reception, developing their literacy, numeracy, and social skills through fun and engaging activities and projects.

Welcome to Year 1
A very warm welcome to all our children and families joining Year 1 at Eden Park Primary! This is an exciting year full of new learning, growing independence, and lots of fun along the way.
We have two wonderful Year 1 classes:
Bumblebees
Butterflies
In Year 1, we build on the fantastic foundations laid in Reception and help the children transition smoothly into more structured learning. Our days are filled with exciting topics, hands-on activities, and opportunities to explore, create, and imagine. From discovering the world around us to growing our reading and writing skills, every child is encouraged to be curious, confident, and kind.

Our Curriculum
We begin the Autumn term with a focus on musicality and performance as children rehearse and perform a show at Brixham Theatre, developing their confidence, singing and speaking skills. They’ll also explore musical composition by learning the glockenspiel and creating their own ostinatos. After half-term, we dive into History with the Gunpowder Plot, before switching to Geography in our long enquiry on weather, forecasting and compass points. We finish the term with a festive DT project, designing and making Christmas decorations.
In Spring 1, our Computing curriculum introduces essential digital skills, followed by a short Art enquiry focused on observational drawing. Spring 2 brings a long and inspiring Art enquiry, where children explore artists and create their own masterpieces for a gallery outcome. Alongside this, our popular "Moving Robots" unit blends Computing and DT as children learn to write algorithms and navigate obstacles.
As summer arrives, we turn back time in our History enquiry on Castles, discovering their features and purposes before visiting a real one. In Summer 2, children complete two DT projects: creating moving picture books using mechanisms and designing, marketing, and making their own smoothies. Our final short Geography enquiry teaches map skills, which the children apply during a walk around Brixham to identify human and physical features.
Enriching Year 1
At Eden Park Primary, we believe that learning should be meaningful, memorable and full of wonder. In Year 1, we enrich the curriculum with a wide range of hands-on experiences that bring learning to life. Our visit to Totnes Castle gives children the chance to explore history in a real-life setting, sparking curiosity and imagination. We grow and plant together, learning about nature and where our food comes from, and we enjoy cooking simple dishes to develop life skills and independence. Sport and teamwork are celebrated through football, tag rugby sessions at our local club, and our popular Ocean Club, where children learn about marine life and how to care for the environment. We also welcome visiting artists who inspire creativity through collaborative projects, and a qualified professional who teaches us basic first aid – helping children feel empowered, safe and capable. These rich experiences help our Bumblebees and Butterflies develop confidence, compassion and a lifelong love of learning.
